The evening of March 20, 1952, when that year's Academy Awards were presented at the RKO Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, had special meaning for Vincente Minnelli as a director and man. He had been nominated for the Best Director award for An American in Paris, which had received he Best Picture nomination. All his life he had been waiting for this moment, and the timing could not have been better since he had just gone through some frustrating years in his career and a divorce from Judy Garland, in 1951, which turned out to be nastier and uglier than necessary. -Prelude  Vincente Minnelli's showbiz career must have been preordained. He was literally born in the trunk, as Judy Garland, his future wife-actress, would famously sing in her 1954 movie, A Star Is Born. | |
