River of Champions is a work of fiction based on a true story about a high school hockey team who, against all odds, is making a run for the State Championship. It is a compelling, inspirational story about relationships and growing up. It is also about kids with a dream and what they are willing to do to achieve it. While this book appeals to sportsmen, its true strength is in the inspirational aspects. The story generates broad-based appeal for all ages and both genders. As a high school student, Mary Schofield watched this fiercely dedicated, bare bones, rag-tag high school hockey team fight to become the Minnesota State High School Champions. She never forget their grit, desire, never-give-up determination and the breathtaking on-ice thrills that the Prowler team provided the fans in the cold little arena in the lonely little town on the desolate wind swept prairies of Northern Minnesota. She holds degrees in anthropology and secondary education from the University of New Mexico and has taught anthropology, English, music, social studies and special education on the high school and junior high school levels. She interviewed over a hundred people to fulfill this dramatic story. Her hockey interest has continued through the levels of youth hockey through her son, Andy, who presently plays A level Bantam hockey in Minnesota. - Back cover.… (mehr)
