Preface -- This book is not written for members of Anthropological Expeditions, whose work demands far more through acquaintance with the subject matter than could possibly be conveyed in a single volume. INTRODUCTION. 1. What Folklore Is. -- The word Folk-Lore -- literally "the learning of the people" -- was coined in 1846 by the late Mr. W. J. Thoms to replace the earlier expression "popular antiquities."

Hinweis zur Identitätsklärung |
Die Informationen stammen von der englischen "Wissenswertes"-Seite. Ändern, um den Eintrag der eigenen Sprache anzupassen. The Handbook of Folklore was first published in 1890 as by George Laurence Gomme for The Folklore Society. Then in 1913/1914 it was thoroughly revised and expanded, again for The Folklore Society, by Charlotte Sophia Burne, using the structure of Gomme's edition but very little of its actual text. Many of the editions entered on LT are later reprints which do not specify which edition, however, the presence of Burne as author may be taken to indicate that a copy is the revised edition.
The work was further enlarged in 1957 by Sona Rosa Burstein; at least one member has a copy of that edition.
