Lucy Ellis moved to the Big Apple to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a fashion designer, but the native Midwesterner has just about had it with the city. A mousy, self-conscious girl trapped in a job at a designer sweatshop, Lucy has been mistreated, road-blocked, and otherwise insulted since her arrival. Overwhelmed by city life, Lucy is about to pack it all in and return home to Minnesota. Then she meets Wyatt. After being publicly dissed by the glamour girl he'd been dating, man-about-town (and bored Ph.D. anthropologist) Wyatt Hayes wants to prove he's still at the top of his game and boasts to his best friend that he can transform any girl -- even wallflower Lucy Ellis -- into this year's "It" girl. If he can fool the upper crust of New York society into thinking an impostor like Lucy is the real thing, he can rip the chiffon veil off the whole Park Avenue social scene. Lucy's an unlikely candidate to become a red-carpet butterfly, but she considers it her last resort and jumps at the opportunity to "become somebody" in New York. Wyatt begins to rigorously train Lucy in the style, sounds, and sensibilities of socialites born with entire sets of silver spoons in their mouths. Three months of preparation culminate in Lucy's appearance at the ultra-exclusive Fashion Forum Gala, where Lucy and Wyatt finally confront New York's aristocracy -- and their feelings for each other. Set against the glittering backdrop of contemporary Manhattan, The Overnight Socialite puts a 21st-century sheen on a timeless story of transformation and unlikely love.… (mehr)

I struggled to finish. I felt disengaged and at times bored. There was very little character development for Wyatt, and for his relationship with Lucy Jo as a whole. Where was the spark?! The anticipation?! So much potential, but a regretfully underwhelming read. ( )

If there was one word for this book it would be... meh?

I think going into this, I expected more pizzaz and dazzle from this. The writing style did nothing to help this, feeling very dry and dull and overall hard to get through at times; the characters were very flat and never really changed (by the end I literally hated all of them) and I wasn't fond of the lack of plot. The book was basically party, Lucy does something, party, Cornelia bitches about something, party, Wyatt thinks about his book.

Overall, while there were a few scenes that I enjoyed more than others, and I appreciated the fact that the romance was very subtle and was not part of the book until the very end, this book fell flat.

I picked this up on a whim. It was a quick, fun and somewhat entertaining read...despite how shallow it was for the most part. Like hello, people and their images/reputations in high society, like ick!

However, there is some actual backbone to this story of glitz and glamour. Lucy Jo, is a force to be reckoned with... once she got over the humiliating moment on Nola's cat walk as she tries to climb her way to the top of society through Wyatt's training.

Man so many people are so shallow in this book. But I rather liked some of the secondary characters as they show that they are not just empty headed (hello looking at Dottie and Eloise). The primary focus was focused on Lucy's dive into elite society, and doing everything possible in order to reach her ultimate goal...become a fashion designer.

While parts of it was rather soap opera like, I do enjoy the fun and comedic moments that Lucy brings. She keeps it very down to earth in her own way, even while pretending to be an heiress. She certainly was a breath of fresh air in a world of stiff and fierce backstabbing elite society.

The ending was a little open ended, which makes it different from the usual chick lit books I have read. I would have preferred a happily ever after Cinderella ending, but hey this is quite interesting and fun. ( )

Okay, it's a fluffy chick lit piece and not particularly original. If you skip all the designer name dropping (ads? do some of these authors get some sort of kick back every time they mention?), story arc, characters, and writing style all good and readable. ( )

Lucy Jo is a struggling fashion designer in Manhattan trying to make it big... but even her biggest break turns into a huge disaster. Luckily Wyatt Hayes IV is there with a social experiment to turn Lucy Jo into the next rising socialite.

I picked this book up to read a bit of fluff and romance, some light-hearted fun. I ended up with a modern day take of My Fair Lady. I actually almost dropped the book around page 80 where the story mimicked the rain in Spain scene in My Fairy Lady without any innovative difference. I can't believe I actually finished this book. I told myself, go on until page 100 to drop it, but by then even though I already know the main plot points, there was just something that made me want to turn the page.

I can't say I love any of the characters or really hate any of them. I can't really say I was enthralled by the plot (because I already knew how it would end).

I did appreciate the ending, because it was different than the original.

At the end of the book, I just feel that it was a simple, easy lighthearted read. How ironic that at first Lucy Jo can only make imitations of good works; and this author does the same thing with her novel.

One and a half stars rounded down because it just felt like a directly translated modern version of My Fair Lady. I don't think I recommend it in general. But if you do like easy, brainless romance and you are not bothered by modern knockoffs, knock your self out. ( )
