Half way through this book, I started skimming rapidly, not willing to waste my time on a book that ends horribly (the problem with reading ebooks- if i had been reading a hard copy, I would have read the last sentence and saved four hours of my life). My problems with this book: Glamorizes and romanticizes adultery and suicide- this is my major reason for the 1 star rating. Characters are unrealistic, even the setting is unreal. For example, the main character Forrest has a huge ranch (250000 acres I think) with a wide range of activities going on, breeding everything from angora goats to goldfish and a range of crops, as well as mining elsewhere. He has so many employees, there is a large village on his ranch of their families. And every morning he rides around on his horse for one hour everyday and somehow knows about every employee and their families and how they are doing their jobs in a kind of Sherlock Homes method. A triangle romance provides the basis for a questioning of the meaning of masculinity, as well as an examination of agribusiness in California.Jack London said of this novel: "It is all sex from start to finish -- in which no sexual adventure is actually achieved or comes within a million miles of being achieved, and in which, nevertheless, is all the guts of sex, coupled with strength."
