Unfortunately, her best friend Kate points out that with a name like that she really has to BE awesome. Sophie spends the rest of the day trying to show everyone how awesome she is, and of course every plan backfires. Transitional reader. Sophie, the titular character of this transitional chapter book, needs a new name. She's the middle child, normal in most ways, and she needs something, like a new nickname, to stand out. After visiting the library, and seeing characters such as "Nate the Great", "Ramona the Brave" and "harriet the Spy", she decides to be Sophie the Awesome. First, she needs to do something worthy of the name. Sophie has many pratfalls as she tries to prove how awesome she is, mostly ending in disappointment (and sometimes being sent to the nurse's office). Sophie has to learn how awesome she is already, without needing to prove herself to those around her. The story is simple, following her throughout one day, but the story is tedious at times, and Sophie makes rather silly attempts to prove her awesomeness. Appropriate for kids 8 to 10.
