Un ouvrage fascinant, doué de ce magnétisme propre aux oeuvres-monde, celles qui nous interpellent, nous agacent parfois de leur mystères indescriptibles, nous embrouillent dans leurs méandres tortueux mais nous couvent aussi d'une bienveillante empathie, nous accueillent avec spontanéité et allégresse tout en cherchant à nous perdre en leur sein.

La Maison dans laquelle m'a autant séduit qu'exaspéré par sa richesse et sa densité, ses personnages incroyablement présents, ses énigmes insondables et ses recoins inexplorés. Il y a dans cet amalgame vaguement construit, dans cette succession de points de vue et dans ces sauts dans le continuum temporel balisés par des concordances thématiques et sémiologiques (un peu à la manière des films de Lynch), dans ces témoignages et ces récits des liens ténus, pas toujours intelligibles, mais perceptibles, qui font tenir le tout sans qu'on en saisisse parfaitement les règles, sans qu'on en comprenne la structure. On ressent davantage qu'on comprend ce qui se passe et on peste souvent en quête de notes de bas de page ou de fin de chapitre, d'annexes, de schémas ou de cartes. Peine perdue, on ne peut se fier qu'à ses souvenirs qui parfois nous mettent sur la piste d'un sens caché mais ne suffisent pas à tout assimiler.

La Maison se dévoile progressivement mais ne dit jamais tout. Ses habitants en connaissent certains ressorts et dynamiques mais jamais l'intégralité, se parlent comme des adultes sensés tout en se comportant comme les gamins qu'ils sont censés être, répondent par des ellipses aux questions qu'on leur pose ou s'éloignent avec un air entendu, nous laissant interdits, pantois et dubitatifs.

On a souvent envie de revenir en arrière, retrouver le passage éclairant, la référence obscure. Parfois, cela aide, un peu (le chapitre se déroulant dans la Cage avec les photos d'enfants permet au moins de comprendre qui est qui dans le passé et le présent). Parfois non. Cela peut rebuter. Mais ce livre se vit plus qu'il ne se livre, se devine plus qu'il ne se révèle, se referme en ouvrant des portes. Vers l'Ailleurs et l'Absolu.

I don't hate the characters. But, I just don't find the story interesting. And the ages of the children are all too young for their levels of sophistication. ( )

I only read the first 80 pages or so. Very interesting writing style, but the characters and the pacing didn't appeal to me, and I never seem to latch onto what the plot or driving them might be. Sure, i could have given it more time, but why? Also, I found out after getting this via inter-library loan that it is considered a YA book, and I guess that explains part of my problem with the characters. ( )

This book is hard to describe. I read this book for the Fantasy reading challenge, as it is a book with a disabled protagonist. Basically, The Gray House is the story of a handful of boys in a school for disabled children. The school has a connection to another dimension, and the boys can use this connection to travel through space and time, and experience things that they otherwise would not be able to experience. This is a challenging book: the narrative is non-linear, and the story is long, cynical, philosophical, and much more character-driven than plot-driven (aka. very Russian). The children's impending graduation provides a sense of tension because none of the characters wants to leave the school where they are accepted for who they are (and some have superpowers due to the reality-shifting nature of the house, although this aspect is not as important as it would be in a lesser book). I would recommend this book to people who are fine with a slow, character-driven story; and to people who like more "literary" literature. I think this book would go over better with people who usually dislike genre literature, than with most genre fans. I really liked it, and will probably buy a copy to re-read. ( )
