Samuel R. Delany Jr. was born in Harlem, New York on April 1, 1942. He is a science fiction and short story writer. His first novel, The Jewels of Aptor, was published in 1962. He has written more than 20 novels and collections of short stories, memoirs, and critical essays. He has received mehr anzeigen numerous awards including the Nebula Award for best novel for Babel-17 in 1966 and The Einstein Intersection in 1967, the Nebula Award for best short story for Aye, and Gomorrah and Time Considered as a Helix of Semi-Precious Stones, the Hugo Award for best short story for Time Considered as a Helix of Semi-Precious Stones in 1970 and for his non-fiction book, The Motion of Light in Water, and the Bill Whitehead Award for Lifetime Achievement in Gay Literature in 1993. Die Hauptcharakterin Rydra Wong ist eine weltberühmte Dichterin, die ein Faible für Sprachen hat und eine Zeit lang im Militär in der Kryptografie arbeitete. Als sich der Geheimdienst an Übermittlungen, die kurz vor Sabotageakten aufgezeichnet wurden, die Zähne ausbeißt, wird Mrs Wong hinzugezogen. Sie entdeckt bald, dass die Babel-17 genannten Übermittlungen kein Code, sondern eine hochkomplexe und bis dahin nie dagewesene Sprache sind. Damit beginnt allerdings erst die Handlung, denn Rydra nimmt sich vor, den Absender dieser Nachrichten ausfindig zu machen.
Delany legt einen hohen Fokus auf Sprachtheorie und die Rückschlüsse von Sprache auf das Denken. Man kann seine Ausführungen dabei generell folgen, außer an Stellen, bei denen Rydra in die Fachsprache abgleitet um ihren aktuellen Geistesblitz zu erklären.
Vom Universum her scheint mir Babel-17 eher weich denn hart zu sein, so gibt es unter anderem Geister und allerhand nicht weiter erläuterter Begriffe, die einen beim Lesen erst einmal stutzen lassen.
Alles in allem ein lesenswertes Buch für alle, die ein Interesse an Sprachtheorie haben, aber generell ist es doch eher Geschmackskost.
Von all dem abgesehen ist mir die Interpunktion und Rechtschreibung negativ aufgefallen. Ich kann Fehler in beiden verschmerzen, aber hier traten sie in einiger Regelmäßigkeit auf, die einem Profi so nicht unterlaufen sollte.… (mehr)
