Shiba Ryotaro (1923-1996) was a highly respected historical novelist and critic with a unique viewpoint, largely known as "Shiba's view of history". Kurzbiographie: Shiba Ryotaro, one of Japan's most popular authors, was born in Osaka in 1923. He graduated from Osaka University of Foreign Studies, where he studied Mongolian and served in the Imperial Japanese Army during the World War II, as did many other students.
After the war he worked as a newspaper reporter and began to write novels, mainly based on Asian history.
　By writing historical novels he embarked on a lifelong exploration of people and events in Japanese history, trying to establish how a nation's course is set. In 1959 he received the Naoki Prize for the ' The Owl Castle' and entered into the group of popular novelists.
　His many works, which often provide new interpretations of the turbulent times of the Meiji Restoration, have had enduring success with Japanese readers. He was named a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1981, cited as a Cultural Merit in 1991, and conferred with the Order of Culture in 1993.

Un retrato épico de un Japón en crisis que mezcla la historia gráfica militar con una trama bélica que cautiva al lector desde el comienzo. Su aclamado autor, Ryotaro Shiba, dedicó una década entera de su vida a escribirla. Ante nosotros se presenta la historia del crecimiento de Japón tras la Restauración Meiji y las guerras sino-japonesa y ruso-japonesa Para ello, Shiba cuenta la historia de los hermanos Yoshifuru y Saneyuki Akiyama y el poeta Shiki Masaoka. Cualquier curioso que quiera saber cómo la floreciente nación japonesa fue capaz de luchar tan encarnizadamente por su supervivencia encontrará en Las nubes sobre la colina un relato histórico que se aleja de la narración clínica o mitológica. 坂の上の雲〈8〉 (文春文庫) von 司馬遼太郎

日本海海戦という、世界に類を見ない最強のNaval Spectacleが描かれている。わたしはサボって1～7巻は読んでいないが、この巻だけでも十分面白い。事前にWikipediaで最低知識をえてから読むと、単純な事実の把握としてではなく、司馬さんの構想自体を楽しめると思う。とくに艦隊運動を文だけで描画するのは無理で（巻末の関連地図もどうやらおかしいと思う）、先に図だけでも見るといい。
文庫本だと8巻割だが、ハードカバーだと6巻割なため、本来の巻割では読めない。よっておそらく単行本第6巻が最強。… (mehr)

峠 (上巻) (新潮文庫) von 司馬遼太郎

幕末の越後長岡藩執政、河井継之助の生涯を描いた歴史小説。なにしろ幕末には英雄・豪傑が多いので、地元ではともかく全国的にはそれほど知名度がない河井継之助だが、なかなかユニークな人物だったようだ。そんな人物を発掘してきて、ここまで面白い読み物に仕立て上げる司馬遼太郎の眼力と筆力には感服する。

史料や史実を踏まえながらも、人物描写がとても活き活きとしていて、かなり書き込んでいる。実際の河井継之助がどういう人物だったのかは知るすべもないが、読者にはまさにここに描かれているような人物が実在していたかのような錯覚を覚えさせる。多分この辺が歴史小説の醍醐味なんだろうと思う。

実はこの作品を読むのは、数回目くらいになる。数年ごとに読みたくなる深く印象に残る作品だ。こういうのを愛読書というんだろう。読む側も年月を経るうちに様々な経験を積み、読み方も受取り方も変わってくるものだが、この作品は毎回いろんな示唆を与えてくれる。… (mehr)
