I love zombie books and movies and this is one of my favorites. This was an easy, fast read and I'm looking forward to reading more of them! OMG. Where is book two?!?!??

Rather simplistic and straightforward plot with few surprises, but uniquely (for a zombie novel) told from a child's POV. Quick, breezy read.

Loved this book and I'm hoping for more in a series!

This book has everything I personally look for in a zombie novel. I want to know a little background on the creation of the zombies (check), I want to know how it starts and affects a typical city (check), but most of all I want to know how the normal person is surviving in a zombie outbreak (big check).

I loved seeing through all 4 of the main character's eyes, but most of all Maddy's. It's not often you get a child's view of a crisis that is this well written and believable. It also does a great job of showing how things that are often easy to deal with (having an inhaler for asthma, etc) can turn into a huge problem during a crisis.

I didn't give a full 5 stars because the ending seemed a little...easy? I don't want to spoil it, but those who read it know that help arrives out of seemingly nowhere. Also, I need to know what happens to Ernesto!

A very suspenseful story about a few people dealing with a zombie outbreak in San Diego.
Six-year-old Maddy's widowed father works as a doorman at a high rise building in San Diego. While he works, he puts Maddy in the empty penthouse on the 25th floor. He has many rules about not touching things and staying quiet. There are new neighbors in the second penthouse on their floor. No one can hear or see her or he could lose his job.
Jeff and Kristi are house-sitting for the owner of the second penthouse. He is an ER doctor and she is an ICU nurse.
There is news of people going crazy in Los Angeles and the news reports it as a bad batch of drugs, but it spread quickly to San Diego and Jeff knows it's not drugs. He saw what happened at his hospital.
Maddy's father comes up to the penthouse early in a panic and makes her hide in the air vent. He returns later and soon falls victim to his diabetes and cannot help himself or Maddy.
The chapter design adds to the suspense. Each chapter tells a different character's story, yet they interweave for the reader.
Some proofreading issues in the later part of the book threw me out of the suspense a little, but that is to be expected with an ARC.
Overall, this short novel is a quick, exciting read.
