Mia Alvar is a Filipino writer based in New York. She is a graduate of Harvard College and the School of the Arts at Columbia University. Her debut short story collection is entitled In the Country. I received this book from Goodreads First reads giveaway and really enjoyed it. Normally i like novels but this was a really good book. I however was a tad disappointed in how most of the stories ended. That's the war era for ya. Life in other places really can put your life in perspective. Great debut Mia. Looking forward to a true novel!
This annoyed me, just as many short story collections do. I really enjoyed many of the stories, at least four of the nine I would rate five stars. But the collection ended with a whimper rather than a bang, as the final story was both twice as long as the others and the most disappointing.
Like most short story collections, this veered between 3s and 5s. Alvar is subtle and yet also writes wrenching, thoughtful characters (mostly women) who are negotiating the Filipino diaspora in a human way. (Which is a fancy-pants way of saying that not every decision they make is perfect and not every impulse they have is saintly). The Marcos presidency/dictatorship is dealt with directly but almost personally? It reminds me a bit of Allende. You don't see the violence, but the impact of it saturates the book, as well as the relationship between the Philippines and the Middle East. Some of it dragged a tiny bit, but this is such a wonderful debut collection and some of these stories are just. so. good that I can't rate it any lower than a 4.… (mehr)
