Fourteen good stories, some of them great, all investigating the possible consequences (utopia or dystopia or in-between) of some technology already in play now in the 2010s and 2020s.

Like with most antholologies, one or two stories left me scratching my head, not sure what they were about, where they took place, whether they were lacking or were beyond my limited ability to understand them - even though, scene by scene, they all did keep my interest.

Analee Newitz's "When Robot and Crow Saved East St. Louis" was one of the best sci-fi stories I've read in a while.

Imagine the character wealth of a classic Russian novel, but with markedly varied gender orientations and species. This is the quick description of this third book in the trilogy. The longer version follows the players who evolved from when Tina and Rachel escaped from Earth and found themselves in a galaxy-wide mess that eventually involved black holes hidden in almost every star in the universe. They'd been put there eons ago in what was eventually described as a messy divorce between two alien races that wiped out most of each other.
Now, the good guys/gals/self-described are in a race to stop the Bereavement which will trigger all the black holes to consume their star hosts. Add in a demented set of princesses including Eliza, Tina's lover and the only good princess, Tina having had her body hijacked by another female with evil tendencies, half the galaxy shooting at the other half, coupled with a mega-evil dude whose touch sickens and kills almost immediately, and you have a full time job (fun though) keeping everyone straight in your head. Me ha costado mucho arrancar con esta novela, el principio con los protagonistas de jóvenes se me atascaba mucho y no ha sido hasta la segunda mitad del libro que me ha enganchado. Al final lo he devorado bastante rápido una vez llegados a la chicha. Incluso me ha gustado la fusión de magia y ciencia ficción que hace (una de sus mayores criticas por lo que he leído).
PERO, aunque me han gustado los protagonistas, creo que les falta una capa más de profundidad o construcción, los he encontrado demasiado “estereotipados” dentro de la definición de outcast. Así como sus backgrounds de peques me han parecido hasta exagerados, o al menos no me han ayudado mucho a encontrar el tono de la novela. El estilo de escritura de la autora no ha ayudado a hacerlo interesante con momentos que me chirriaban. Aún así cuando entras en la atmosfera y el mundo se convierte en una buena lectura ligera.

Supongo que lo encasillaría entre un MEH y un GUAY.… (mehr)
