I loved the front cover of this book and the synopsis was intriguing, but the author failed to deliver. I hated the names of the two main characters, Sphinxie and Cadence, and although it started chillingly well, it never really went anywhere. I was hoping for an intriguing psychological thriller that would have me on the edge of my seat and in abject fear whenever Sphinxie and Cadence were alone together, but alas I once again ended up with mediocrity. Sphinxie was basically weak and annoying, and Cadence was just sick, both mentally and physically. I didn't care what happened to either of them. Blah!… (mehr)

BREAKING BUTTERFLIES is perhaps one of the most underrated and overlooked books of 2014. From ChickenHouse/Scholastic, I thought this book was amazing. At once moving and creepy, the story of dysfunctional mothers passing on an even worse legacy to their children.

The mothers in this story have a fairly dysfunctional relationship, with Leigh being the shining star to Sarah's shy and timid character. But that is nothing compared to what they do to their children. They indoctrinate Sphinxie and Cadence with the notion that they will grow up and marry. The children are told repeatedly in stories that they are made for each other and meant to be together. And this is the basis on which the tragedy is built. For Cadence, Leigh's child, is not only tremendously brilliant and talented, he is also a psychopath.

I won't give more of the story away, but will say that I thought the author built a very convincing world and that her/his characters are well drawn. So fatally weak.
