Introduction to Historical and Comparative Linguistics von Raimo Antilla
This was the text for a diachronic and synchronic linguistics class I took in the 1980's. Notably, a great many of the examples were in Finnish. I thought of Antilla recently as I stood in a Finnish department store, marveling not just at the Marimekko fabrics and subdued furniture lines of my Scandinavian decor childhood, but also at the impressive number of sequential and umlauted vowels in my surround.
