This well worn book is inscribed, in a childhood hand, Verna Williams 2724 Mallon. Verna, who lived in Spokane, WA, was a first cousin to my mother, Eleanor Harkless.
Fascinating study of English grammar as it was taught at the turn of the last century. Much more comprehensive than nowadays, I assure you. The title says "Elementary" but this is intended for high school students.
I was struck by the obsolete phrases; ie in the section on subjunctive verbs, one of the example sentences is "I had as lief do it as not. Also, many examples in the same section (subjunctive) are from quite sophisticated literature and poetry sources.
Inscribed: "Elmer Louis Spray, Mound Valley School, Sept. 18, 1907"
Elmer is my grandfather. Oddly, September 18th is my birthday (although NOT 1907!!)… (mehr)
