Dr. Joost Augusteijn is a lecturer in European History at Leiden University in the Netherlands since 2000. He previously worked as a lecturer in Modern Irish History at Trinity College, Dublin (1994-5) and Queen's University, Belfast (1995-2000). Since 2000 he has spent a semester as visiting Associate Professor at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia (2004), and a year as a fellow-in-residence at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (2010-2011).

This is a very interesting book. As an international observer of the Irish War of Independence the author has no inherent prejudices in commencing. The book examines regional conflict in five separate counties of Mayo, Tipperary, Derry, Wexford and Dublin. As such it can be seen as a complement to more recent county-specific works on both the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil War. The organisation and operation of the IRA in each county is analysed as is how guerrilla warfare developed in each county. The specific county conditions that assisted or hindered the progress of ancillary services such as the Dáil courts and the British forces in the locality is also analysed. There is a very interesting and readable summary chapter together with a final addendum on the social composition of the IRA in each area.… (mehr)

This book had its genus in a symposium held in Queen's University Belfast in 1998. A wide variety of historians each contribute a specific chapter in the book on the wider topic of the Irish Revolution 1913-23. The book is edited by Joost Augusteijn, a Dutch scholar, who has a clear interest in the subject and who has published in the area himself. In my opinion among the most interesting chapters include Novick’s “Propaganda”, Coleman’s “Longford Mobilisation” (now a book), Mitchell’s “Alternative Government”, Inoue’s “Propaganda”, Ward’s “Gender” and Dolan’s “Commemoration.” Each chapter is well written, argued and referenced providing readers with sources for further reading should they desire it.… (mehr)
