I had to look up "capsule" collection to remember that "capsule" is a repurposed word for items of clothing that frugal women have relied on for centuries – versatile items that never go out of style. The little black dress, or pejoratively "that brown thing".

Never mind, what we have here is a book of handknit designs from Interweave Knits Magazine. The designs were originally published in digital form and have now been collected as a print book.

First, about the prose. It depends on your taste whether you will like the oh so evolved writing style. Ms Babin, the magazine editor calls it "Slow Fashion", maybe the subtitle should be the Zen of Knitting or some such, but oh, I see that title is taken. Enjoy the text if you can, ignore it otherwise.

The knitwear pieces are lovely, for the most part. Although they are presented here in excessively neutral colors to show off their timelessness, and in yarns that will break the bank, most of them can be done in color using affordable yarns. I would change the gauge on a few. Whether the designs will look nice on someone with curves is a different question. Willowy breastless models show off the designs very well. The two round-faced models are still slender on today's BMI scale. In a couple of photos it almost looks as if these slender women stuff their bodices and bellies to look more ?? what word goes here ?? pregnant?? You can get an idea of the styles favored by Interweave by going to the website.

The instructions are clear with text and charted elements. There are several photos of each garment so you can see how the pattern works.

Most of the designs are for a middle to advanced knitter but a couple look hard enough to scare off everyone. I'll try one when the cool weather comes and let you know how it goes.

I received a review copy of "Wool Studio: The Knitwear Capsule Collection" by Meghan Babin (F+W Media) through NetGalley.com.

Complex construction and instructions make this less than ideal for a beginning knitter, but I like the range of patterns in this.

Wool Studio The Knitwear Capsule Collection by Meghan Babin
Loved the picture on the front and even more once I read the description of this book. Can't say enough good things about this book.
Love the drape in the high end photographs in this book. Have given away two of my sweaters-long cardigans and am in the market to make new ones and the ideas in this book are just what I needed.
Can't decide to which one to try first. Love that the patterns are easy-easy for me and I love the names of the areas on the West and East coasts as I've been through many.
Some of the pattern names on their respective pages are hard to read-dark on dark print or light on light print.
Introdcution talks about the fun things in this book, the designs and what to expect ahead.
The yarn really makes the drape and flirtiness keeping the style glamourous and feminine I feel.
Each pattern starts out with a brief summary of the item and how it's assembled and worked.
Finished size measurements, yarn to be used and what was used in the finished product, needles required, notions, gauge, and other notes.
Stitch guide also gives details of special stitches in the pattern. Very easy to follow-there is no level rating. Some designs are spelled out row by row and then til what length, some are charted on graph style paper.
Like the diagram of the finished item and how each section has a letter corresponding to the finished measurements.
Cowls I also found so stunning. Love infinity scarves-even have my husband wearing his now for warmth.
Charted patterns are very self explanatory and easy to follow along, be sure to read the whole pattern all the way through before you begin.
Yarn resources are mentioned, love the section on all the designers, they leave me inspired from the work they do. Other works by the designers are highlighted at the end.
Received this review copy from F+W Media via Netgalley and this is my honest opinion.
