1972. I read this book which was originally a long New Yorker piece in 1967, in one sitting. It's a meditation on truth in some part. In the Trump era it seems innocent as it discusses the possibility of JFK assassination conspiracies, and advertising hoaxes, as well as Andy-Warhol-Was-He-Fucking-With-Us? It has campy 70s black and white illustrations, somewhat psychedelic and accepts drugs as useful tools to expand consciousness. It is somewhat ambivalent, recognizing that sometimes the put-on is art or comedy, sometimes manipulative and/or obfuscating. It doesn't really get into the dangers of the government intentionally lying to the people, but it explains how to do it to some extent. It prefigures Donald Trump, but it never knew how bad it could get.… (mehr)
