Über den Autor

Kevin Baker was born in August 1958, in Englewood, New Jersey and grew up in Rockport, Massachusetts. He graduated from Columbia University in New York City in 1980. He began his writing career directly after graduation. His first novel, Sometimes You See It Coming, based loosely on the life of Ty mehr anzeigen Cobb, was published in hardcover in 1993 and in paperback by HarperPaperbacks in the spring of 2003. Dreamland, part of Baker’s New York City of Fire trilogy, was published by HarperCollins in 1999, and in paperback the following year. Paradise Alley was published by HarperCollins in 2002. Kevin was the chief historical researcher on Harold Evans' best-selling history, The American Century, published in 1999. He currently writes the monthly "In the News" column for American Heritage magazine, and has also been published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, The Los Angeles Times, The Frankfurter Rundschau, Harper’s magazine, Talk, and The Industry Standard. I read it because the publisher left copy on every doorstep along Strivers Row. With due respect to the author, who seems like a good guy, this is simply dismal.

Here's what I wrote in 2008 about this read: "NYC in Civil War times . . . A pressure cooker as immigrants stream in from Europe and former slaves from the south without adequate employment, which explodes as the U.S. creates a draft to provide soldiers to the Civil War. Good insights also provided to the Irish potato famine."

I read this book some years back because I had read another of the author's books, Sometimes You See It Coming, and enjoyed it. This one was written well enough, but I didn't enjoy it near as much, maybe because the story wasn't that interesting to me. I get sick of all of man's political corruption.

As I remember it, this book was a well researched and inventive narrative with the arc of the story a popular criminal trial of the period (early twentieth century), with much of the action taking place at Dreamland amusement park in Coney Island. The criminal trial being about Tammany Hall police corruption. Many of the characters and events in Dreamland are purported to be based on real, historical accounts and people.… (mehr)
