- John Franklin Bardin was born in Cincinnati in 1916. After an unhappy childhood he left the University of Cincinnati in his first year to find a full-time job. He became a ticket-taker and bouncer at a local roller-skating rink and educated himself by working at night, reading and clerking in a bookstore. He moved to New York near the age of thirty, and served as an executive at an advertising agency for nearly twenty years. In addition to his various journalistic endeavors, he taught advertising and creative writing at the New School for Social Research from 1961 to 1966. He is the author of ten novels. He died in 1981.

Una mortaja para la abuela von Gregory Tree
En el vasto hall de su casa de la quinta avenida se halló el cadáver de la señora Ella Maybelle Longstreet, extrañamente sucio, esquelético y vestido con un exiguo traje de baño. Un polvoriento círculo de pisadas, que parecían bailar, rodeaba los retratos de familia, que ahora miraban a la pared. La carta de una ciega provocó el descubrimiento del hecho.
Después de un largo tratamiento, Ellen es dada de alta y regresa a Nueva York con su marido. Ha pasado dos años internada y no ha visto un teclado desde que sufrió la crisis nerviosa. Ahor quiere reanudar su carrera de concertista, y lo primero que busca al llegar a casa es su clavicordio. Sólo que está cerrado y no aparece la llave.
Philip Banter es un poco mujeriego, bebe más de la cuenta y su matrimonio no anda bien. Nada demasiado grave, hasta la mañana en que se encuentra en su oficina una "confesión" sobre una nueva infidelidad que no recuerda haber cometido. Lo asombroso es que ese documento parece haberlo escrito él mismo, pero ¿cuándo?, ¿tal vez la noche anterior, en estado de embriaguez?
