The sixties were possibly the greatest decade of last century – an exciting time for music and youth. No other youth culture has personified this more than the Mods, who emerged in the early years of the decade as followers of fashion and soul music and who became the style leaders for this new youth culture. This lavish pictorial history contains over 150 photographs of the original Mods, celebrating their thrilling and unique way of life.
Took me quite a while to get through this one... the page number (which is low) is rather misleading, as the book itself is enormous. The photos are quite high quality, and rather beautiful, but the bulk of the pages are full of rather tiny type... and oddly, there are a large number of typos.

Naturally, the book focuses more upon Townshend's doings than the other members of The Who. It's interesting to see an outsiders view, even if one feels at times that some of the bigger issues in the band are skimmed over. Unfortunately, John Entwistle's role was rather thoroughly glossed over in the book - they didn't even mention his marriage to Alison or the birth of his son!
While the book is well put together, and certainly insightful in terms of Chris Stamp, Kit Lambert, and Shel Talmy fiascos, I feel it didn't go into enough depth when it comes to the technical aspect (and personal lives) of those involved with the band. I'd consider it more of a supplementary text than anything truly in depth.… (mehr)

This was the British book release for the Ken Russell movie, TOMMY, and it's a great find for the fan of the movie. The photographs are numerous both candid on-set and film stills, and the stories are fun, especially since Oliver Reed, Keith Moon, and Russell are all gone now.
TOMMY was the last of the major British commercial flicks for Russell, as he moved to stranger areas later. It's interesting to note that Reed was supposed to go to Hollywood to film JAWS, but he so disliked Los Angeles, he chose to film TOMMY instead, true-blue Brit that he was. Mooney's escapades are covered and Pete Townsend is more honest here than in his later remembered enhancements of the filming.
It's a good find for the film buff.

A great snapshot of one of the most buttoned-up subcultures. Cleancut-looking kids all hopped up on amphetamines dancing to R&B! While the 150 black-and-white photographs are wonderful, the 18-page essay that bookends the images is priceless.
