A registered profession engineer, Mr. Baron began his career with RCA in Camden, New Jersey and then in 1960 joined Computer Control Company in Framingham, Massachusetts. He was program manager for the on board computers that flew on Mariner II (Venus) and Mariner IV (Mars) on the first inter planetary missions. He managed an integrated circuit laboratory that developed some of the industry's first semiconductor memories and was worldwide system's manager for Honeywell's minicomputer business. In 1971 he founded Prime Computer, which became one of the Fortune 500 largest American companies, and was its first president and chief executive officer, building a worldwide business. He was in private practice for six years and in 1984, he moved to Denver where he founded Fulcrum, Inc. a book publishing company.

In just over 400 pages, you'll find selections from the contributions of 76 different authors writing of North America. The works are organized around a few major themes: Nature and Discovery; Nature and Challenge; Nature, Peace and Self Definition; Songs of the American Spirit. By necessity few selections are more than five pages, and none is longer than ten. Each includes a short biography of the author. In addition to a bibliography for each, there are two pages of vital statistics so that you can select 18th, 19th, or 20th Century writers, or avoid professional writers. While the inclusion of Robert Service, Longfellow, Barry Lopez, Roderick Nash, and John Muir are obvious, and even William O. Douglas, there are at least a dozen that I had never heard of. While Thomas Jefferson is not obscure, the inclusion of a portion of his letters to James Madison more unexpected, but certainly can explain his role in the Louisiana Purchase. The list is a bit thin on Native Americans, Asian, Black and Hispanic writers, but the anthology can give you a taste of the style and skill of new writers that you can dive into more deeply.… (mehr)
