At a time when violence, and especially rape, have become endemic to our society, Fear into Anger presents a unique new approach to women's self-defense. Unlike other books or manuals on the subject, the emphasis here is not on 'tricks' of excape or set responses to model situations. Fear into Anger teaches women the process of analyzing an assault-any assault-and the selection of appropriate responses from a repetoire of techniques explained in the instruction chapters of the book.

Women need complete and thorough information about what will work and why it will work to remain in control of a situation where they are threatened with violence. To this end, Bateman provides more self-defense techniqes, and more types of them, than any other book on the market. They have all been tested in Feminist Karate Union classes and have proven simple, effective, and easy-to-learn. But the most important skill women can learn from Fear into Anger is mental, not physical: 'If you are ever attacked, you will have to make decisions. I hope that you will study this book in such a way that you will automatically think effective defense.'

To help women make quick and decisive choices under pressure, each chapter: (1) examines alternative strategies, and their injury-causing potential, for various kinds of assault; (2) gives a number of multiple-assailant situations; and (3) includes problems (along with guideline answers) where the reader must figure out a step-byi-step defense appropriate to teh circumstanes.

Chapter 1 deals with the philosphical and psychological aspects of self-defense, particularly in regard to rape. Rape terrorizes the entire population of women, who have been trained by society to fit the role of the perfect victim: passive, fearful, and dependent on male support. If this conditionn is to be changed, women must develop the self-respect, confidence, and strength which are necessary for the will to defend themselves. They must believe they are worth fighting for; they must believe they have a chance to succeed. Each woman should construct a personal program of rape prevention that fits her lifestyle and values.

The following chapers each explain some particluar concept in self-defense: karate puches, kicks and blocks; how to break out of holds, including a quick counterattack after the break; take-downs; defense from weapons like knives or clubs; the use of impromptu weapons; special situations, such as defense fsrom beds, cars, stairs, or the ground. Specific suggestions for physical conditioning, so important not only for self-confidence but for flexibility, strength, and endurance, are also given. The author pays special attention to exercises for developing upper and lower-body strength.

Fear into Anger is designed for the widest possible audience. Individuals as well as groups will find it invaluable for teaching themselves self-defense. Those who are already students of a martial art can use it as a practical supplement to their own more specialized training. Instructors who wish to base a course of self-defense on it will find the book suitable either for an autonomous program or as part of a general physical education program.

'Self-defense books that focus on women's specific needs are hard to find. Bateman's book covers a wide range of issues facing women who want to learn self-defense-and gives clear, simple instruction on the basic elements of self-defense. Fear into Anger provides a useful summary of basic self-defense techniques and principles. It is a valuable resource for use in conjunction with self-defense instruction and as an addition to regular practice.'-Deb Friedman, Feminist Alliance Against Rape, Washington, D..C.

'Py Bateman's Fear into Anger is a rare and sensitive book for all women. Within its pages one finds practical instruction for anyone who seeks to protect herself from attack. A thorough understanding of the contents of this book will enable any woman to recognize and identify her fears while providing her with the techniques to conquer these fear.'-Janet Taggart, Director, Rape Reduction Program, City of Seattle

'The techniques taught in the book are withoiut a doubt important tols for self-protection. Life for a woman, unfortunately, involves the continual apprehension and fear fo assault by known and unkonwn men. It's a (damn) shame that a book like this has to be written, but it is obvioius that it is needed andlong overdue.

'I highly recommend that the book be read, and its message followed closely. I found myself mentally applying the techniqes presented to situations which happen every day to victims of sexual assault and couldn't agree more with Ms. Bateman's philsophy of turning 'fear into anger' and fighting back.'-Robert W. Fenn, Lt., Bellevue, Washington Police Department
