**OFFSITE** Ishmael Beah@the Latin School Library Ishmael Beah comes to The Latin School Library to talk about his new book Radiance of Tomorrow! When Ishmael Beah’s A Long Way Gone was published in 2007, it soared to the top of bestseller lists, becoming an instant classic: a harrowing account of Sierra Leone’s civil war and the fate of child soldiers that “everyone in the world should read” (The Washington Post). At the center of Radiance of Tomorrow are Benjamin and Bockarie, two longtime friends who return to their hometown, Imperi, after the civil war. The village is in ruins, the ground covered in bones. As more villagers begin to come back, Benjamin and Bockarie try to forge a new community by taking up their former posts as teachers, but they’re beset by obstacles: a scarcity of food; a rash of murders, thievery, rape, and retaliation; and the depredations of a foreign mining company intent on sullying the town’s water supply and blocking its paths with electric wires. As Benjamin and Bockarie search for a way to restore order, they’re forced to reckon with the uncertainty of their past and future alike. With the gentle lyricism of a dream and the moral clarity of a fable, Radiance of Tomorrow is a powerful novel about preserving what means the most to us, even in uncertain times. Named one of the Christian Science Monitor's best fiction books of 2014 Ishmael Beah was born in Sierra Leone in 1980. He moved to the United States in 1998 and finished his last two years of high school at the United Nations International School in New York. In 2004 he graduated from Oberlin College with a B.A. in political science. He is a member of the Human Rights Watch Children’s Rights Division Advisory Committee and has spoken before the United Nations, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Center for Emerging Threats and Opportunities (CETO) at the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory, and many other NGO panels on children affected by the war. His work has appeared in VespertinePress and LIT magazine. He lives in New York City. Ishmael Beah, RADIANCE OF TOMORROW Ishmael Beah woke us from our slumbers with his memoir of being a forced child soldier in Sierra Leone, A Long Way Gone. Join us as the UNICEF Ambassador and Advocate for Children Affected by War revisits his homeland after the fighting is done and continues the story of his country's civil war in Radiance of Tomorrow: A Novel. Friends Benjamin and Bockarie return to their desecrated village, intent on rebuilding the community by taking up their old posts as teachers. Hunger, retaliation, scattered acts of violence, and a foreign mining concern’s depredations slow their progress and precipitate some soul searching, but our heroes (like Beah himself) stay radiant to the end.
