Can we forge a new link between the insights of science and the deeper promptings of the human spirit through a rebirth of love for matter? A meditation on our manifold relations with nature.
This interesting pamphlet situates our attitude to the natural world in a history of ideas. It describes the 17th century mystical approach to nature found in Quakerism and Neo-Platonism, of nature as a manifestation of the divine. This encompasses love for nature, which Benfey sees as essential to a new relationship with nature. The new way of seeing the natural world must be informed not only by science but also by this kind of theology of the heart.
