Beverly Cleary was born on April 12, 1916. Her family lived on a small farm in McMinnville, Oregon, before moving to Portland. Ironically, this internationally known author of children's books struggled to learn how to read when she entered school. Before long however Cleary had learned to love mehr anzeigen books, and as a child she spent a good deal of her time in the public library. Cleary attended Chaffey Junior College in Ontario, Ca. and went on to earned her first B.A. in 1938 from the University of California at Berkeley. Her second degree, a B.A. in library science, was bestowed by the University of Washington in Seattle in 1939. She worked for a short time as Children's Librarian in Yakima, Washington, before moving to California. Cleary began her writing career in her early thirties. Her first book, Henry Huggins, was published in 1950. Her stories and especially her characters, Henry Huggins and Ramona Quimby, have proven popular with young readers. Her books have been translated into twenty languages and are available in over twenty countries. Some of her best-known titles are Ellen Tebbits (1951), Henry and the Paper Route (1957), Runaway Ralph (1970), and Dear Mr. Henshaw (1983). Several television programs have been produced from the Henry Huggins and Ramona stories. She also wrote two memoirs, A Girl from Yamhill (1988) and My Own Two Feet (1995). Cleary has won many awards for her contributions to children's literature, including the American Library Association's Laura Ingalls Wilder Award in 1975, the Catholic Library Association's Regina Medal in 1980, the John Newbery Medal in 1984 and the National Medal of Arts in 2003. Beezus and Ramona von Beverly Cleary

At the age of 9, Beatrice Quimby - known as Beezus to everyone, because that's how her 4-year-old sister Ramona pronounced her name - has to deal with all the trials of having an annoying younger sister.

I LOVED the Ramona books as a kid, though the ones that stick out for me most are the later ones. I'd forgotten what a pest toddler Ramona was and how exasperating she was to both her sister and her parents. This one is really told more from Beezus's point of view, and you sympathize with the older sister for sure (though a lot of the trouble Ramona gets into is hilarious to read about, if not actually experience). This book was first published in 1955, and it definitely shows its age in some ways - Mother goes "marketing" not (grocery) shopping, and there's a radio and phonograph store, and Beezus plays Sacajawea for the PTA. But it also nails family dynamics and complex emotions between siblings, and so much of it is very funny.… (mehr)

As she starts the fourth grade, Ramona believes that this year will be "the best year of her life, so far." She can show off her calluses from swinging on the rings in the park; the boy she calls Yard Ape sits across the aisle from her; her teacher praises her writing; and she has a new baby sister, Roberta. But best of all, she has a new best friend, Daisy.

Little does Ramona know the challenges her fourth-grade year holds in store. Not only must she improve her rotten spelling, but she must also be a good role model for baby Roberta. And her mother wants her to spend more time with the awful Susan.

Life isn't easy, especially when she is surrounded by perfect spellers and everyone praises her big sister, Beezus, for being responsible. Sometimes Ramona fails, often with hilarious results.
