I like this book because it has really supportive textual features, like illustrations, maps, and graphs, as well as very organized text. The book begins by introducing the penguins’ home, Antarctica. It is supported with both a real picture of the penguins, a map of Antarctica, and where it is located on a world globe. Then the writing moves on to how penguins move around. It includes great figurative details on how they walk “awkward…they waddle along—their bodies swaying and flippers stuck out to balance them,” how they slide, “on their bellies down the icy slopes,” how they cannot fly, but that they are “at home” swimming in the water. The book goes on to explain how penguins are protected from the cold, that they band together, and a textual feature of a picture is included of the penguins in tight circles banded wing to wing. In chronological order the writing explains the annual calendar of the penguin, when it hunts and fishes, when in mates and lays eggs, gives the eggs to the male’s feet, and then move back to the water to find food. An illustration demonstrates the size ratio of the very small penguin egg to the tall penguin adult and how they hold it in their feet to keep it warm. I really like the picture of the snow blowing on the backs of the fathers as they protect the eggs from winter, they must be strong against the wind and live without food for a while. The snow moves in horizontal lines across the page showing striking movement and helping the reader to feel the wind. Finally, the book explains that after the hatching of the new chicks, the mothers return with food, and the fathers may go off to hunt. With the description of the enemies “waiting to kill them” there are labeled pictures with the leopard seal and the orca, or killer whale. The writing is brought full circle explaining that soon it will be winter again and the babies from this year will have eggs of their own to protect. At the end of the story there is another textual feature and index with key vocabulary words and the pages that they are used on. The main idea of this story is to explain the life of a penguin. There are many details included about the penguins including where they live, what they eat, how they hunt for food, their enemies, as well as their yearly life cycle.… (mehr)
