Alienation and Freedom: The Factory Worker and His… von Robert Blauner
An classic contribution in mid-century industrial sociology. Blauner looked at workers in four industries (printing, textiles, automobile manufacturing, and chemicals) and attempted to relate worker alienation to the technology used and system of workplace organization. The theory was good, but the data used to support it was old and somewhat flaky, even at the time. It's still definitely worth looking at, though, for anyone interested in alienation and the sociology of work.
