I read this soooo many years ago and decided to put it away for a few years before reading it again.   But the years came and went and finally i jumped in and did it.

And yes, i enjoyed it totally again.

It's a rather strange book dealing with authoritarian rulers and their lackeys, but what happens if the lackeys decide to do something unexpected?

Set in a colony on where the Dead Sea used to be before it overflowed and flooded all the Mediterranean's surrounding countries.   The colony now mines the special, addictive, purple salt that was sealed down beneath the ground and sells it to the rest of the world.

The authoritarian 75, based in Paris, own the colony and have a global monopoly on the salt it produces.   They have sealed it off from the outside world and only keep in contact with the governor via a green box delivered by a special ship. the governor, in turn, instructs his 6 lackeys to do his bidding.

And then, one night, things all change.   The governor's 6 lackeys send 6 letters to the 75 explaining what happened and they in turn bring in Phileas Book, a constructor of strange crosswords for The Times to decipher the chaotic letters and to work out what the truth is and what really happened in the colony.

It's a really strange story and quite unlike anything else i've read, but it is totally enjoyable and has a great ending.

On se retrouve donc à lire rétrospectivement ce qui survint dans cette Colonie du Proche-Orient, bâtie sur le site même de l'ancienne Sodome – dont le symbole biblique marque au fer rouge l'ensemble du récit – et où le Gouverneur est retrouvé mort un matin. Les jours qui suivirent cette macabre découverte sont alors racontés par les épistoliers, tous proches de la personne du décédé, membres influents de la Colonie mais entièrement soumis à feu son dirigeant qui la régissait d'une main de fer. Les profondes inimitiés et rancoeurs qui les tiraillent transparaissent aisément dans ces lettres volontairement volubiles, chacun suspectant les autres et cherchant à se sortir du piège tendu : alliances, mésalliances qui entretiennent une paranoia aiguë les poussant aux pires extrémités. La femme, le juge, le secrétaire, le respondable de la Sécurité et le médecin expliquent leurs agissements en mettant en avant un passé douteux et des motivations obscures. le 6e personnage, qui n'écrit pas mais intervient de temps en temps dans ces lettres est la fille du juge, la seule personne née sur cette Colonie infernale (cernée par le désert et la mer et constamment plongée dans un brouillard humide chargé de sel) et également le seul autre témoin du drame.
Dans ce monde qui ressasse un passé perdu à jamais (car défintivement englouti), on se prend à attendre la conclusion de l'enquête menée depuis Paris avec un intérêt grandissant, même si quelques tics d'écriture agaçants et de trop nombreuses coquilles sapent la lecture. Personnages complexes, sentiments exacerbés, décors surréalistes et construction ludique : des sensations contradictoires et une ambiance laconique qui rappellent le Philippe Curval de la Forteresse de coton.

Ένα πολύ ενδιαφέρον βιβλίο που συνδυάζει επιτυχημένα εξαιρετικές ιδέες επιστημονικής φαντασίας και μία ιδιαίτερη γραφή που βαδίζει στα χνάρια των καλύτερων παραδόσεων του μαγικού ρεαλισμού. Η υπερβολική -σε σημεία σουρεαλιστική- γραφή είναι ίσως το πιο ξεχωριστό στοιχείο του βιβλίου που αναδεικνύει μία πολύ όμορφη -αν και σχετικά απλοϊκή μετα-αποκαλυπτική κοσμοπλασία. Η ιστορία ακολουθεί τα μονοπάτια ενός κλασικού επιστολικού μυθιστορήματος μυστηρίου, ενώ η αρχική ιδέα της επιστημονικής φαντασίας, η πλυμμήρα, -αν και φανερά στέκεται ως αφορμή για την αφήγηση της εξαιρετικής ιστορίας- δυστυχώς πέφτει σε μία μεγάλη παγίδα αληθοφάνειας που αν η αρχή του είχε στηθεί πιο προσεχτικά θα άφηνε πολύ περισσότερα περιθώρια στον αναγνώστη να βυθιστεί σε αυτόν τον τόσο ιδιαίτερο ανασχηματισμένο κόσμο. Η υπόγεια σάτιρα, η πολύ καλή ανάπτυξη της ιστορίας, οι εξαιρετικές εικόνες και ιδέες μου αφήνουν την υπόσχεση ότι μετά από αυτό το καλό βιβλίο δεν έχω διαβάσει ακόμη το καλύτερο βιβλίο (ή τα καλύτερα βιβλία) της συγγραφέως.
