Über den Autor

Chris Bourke is a writer, journalist, editor and radio producer. He has been staff writer and arts and books editor at the New Zealand Listener, editor of the music magazines Rip It Up and Real Groove, producer of Radio New Zealand's Saturday Morning programme and many documentaries, and author of mehr anzeigen the biography of Crowded House, Something So Strong (Pan Macmillan, 1997), described by the Australian Book Review as a book 'by which writing about popular music in Australasia will be measured for years to come'. Bourke began Blue Smoke as the 2006 research fellow at New Zealand's National Library, and wrote much of it in 2008 while writer-in-residence at the University of Waikato. This is a fascinating history of the era in New Zealand popular music between the end of World War 1 and the arrival of the Beatles in New Zealand in 1964 - covering the rise of dance bands, the influence of jazz, and the sudden and (in many quarters) unwelcome influence of rock'n'roll. It's a great mixture of musical history, social history, and profiles of leading musicians and music industry figure.

The one thing I would have liked is brief guides to the musical aspects of the genres being discussed - although I know I can go to a music dictionary and find out the musical characteristics of bebop as distinct from swing, the flow of the book would be helped by simple explanations for non-musicians like me.… (mehr)
