This history of the American Hot Rod Association told in vivid color photography and expert testimony.

Our family enjoys motorsports, spending time in the summer hitting up amazing local venues like Pikes Peak and Bandemier Speedway. Our son it into "car culture" as it relates to foreign modified cars. I grew up at the local dirt oval.

This book is laid out in a logical and attractive format. The pictures are like a time capsule taking the reader back to the good old days. The text does an excellent and approachable job of sharing the history of this incredible time in automotive sports history.

In addition to the wonderful content of this book, it also has great "feel." It is a sturdy, oversized softcover that wears well with multiple readings and "flip through" sessions. This book will look equally good on your coffee table or in the waiting area of your oil change shop or garage.

A history of the AHRA including many firsts in drag racing and how they eventually dwindled out. This book talked about many things that I didn't know about the AHRA just for the fact that you usually hear more about the NHRA and much of this book happened before I was born but it brought back many memories from when I was a kid watching my dad at the racetracks. I enjoyed reading about all things drag racing and also all the pictures!

Drag Racing’s Rebels (2023) by Doug Boyce. This is the history of the American Hot Rod Association (AHRA). It was formed in the late 1950’s as an alternative to the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) which was the controlling faction in Hot Rod racing at the time. The AHRA ’s purpose was to counter the NHRA by giving more power back to the actual drivers involved in the sport. And by doing that, they also gave the fans what they wanted, more action and thrills.
NHRA raced strictly gas engines, so the AHRA went with Nitro powered motors. Faster cars meant more frantic fans. Each time the NHRA objected to a bend in the rules or an outright change to the rules, the AHRA embraced them. And they also include more types of cars and engines, increasing the number of categories to race in and thereby amplifying the thrills for the fans and payouts to more drivers. More payouts, more drivers. And with more drivers the more secure the AHRA became.
This is a detailed look at the people, concepts and machines that drove the association from the late 50’s through its eventual decline in the 80’s. Along the way many fan boys and girls grew up and became racers or mechanics or owners themselves.
It is hard to summarize this 30 plus year history in a short review. Needless to say, Doug Boyce has managed to trim what had to be thousands and thousands of pages of material, and probably twice as many photos, into this slick, easy-reading history of a great sport. Like all of the CarTech books I’ve owned and read, this is another winner that will capture you from the forward by Don Garlits to the after which talks about the AHRA in the 2000’s. There is hope for the show yet.
