The "first book of go" would be the rules. For someone just starting out, I would put this one 3rd in line of must-read books.1. Janice Kim's "Learn to Play Go: Volume 1" (which includes the rules)2. The Second Book of GoThe Kim books will give you a basis for understanding what this book is talking about."The Second Book of Go" dives right in, with a shallow overview of many topics. Each chapter is a survey of a particular topic like the opening, the endgame, liberties, counting, tesuji, joseki, shape and ko fighting. Giving on several pages to each topic, it's very shallow in it's coverage. However, a player who just learned the rules is still going to have to work hard to absorb this information. I read some chapters in here upwards of 10 times as I progressed, and still picked up new information each time.Of of the key concepts in this book, which will help any new player, comes in the handicap chapter. The premise is that since you're awful, you'll be playing black a lot and usually with a high handicap. It gives you some strategies to practice to exploit your extra starting material, stressing an attacking style. The authors don't suggest a reckless style, but instead want you to put pressure on your opponent right from the start.This book is required reading for all beginners.… (mehr)

De Elementary Go Series gaat in een zevental boekjes dieper in op een aantal belangrijke aspecten van Go. Het is niet noodzakelijk om de boekjes in een bepaalde volgorde te lezen omdat ze allemaal een ander onderwerp behandelen.

Deel 7 gaat over handicap Go en is anders dan de andere boekjes van de serie. Niet alleen gaat het in op voorgift stenen, maar ook de opbouw van het boekje is anders. De eerste 100 pagina's gaan over hoe je gebruik moet maken van de voorgift stenen, daarna volgen een 50-tal pagina's met een aantal voorbeeldpartijen om af te sluiten met 50 pagina's problemen.
Het boekje gaat vooral in op hoe je als zwartspeler gebruik kan maken van je extra stenen, maar er is ook een hoofdstuk die de witspeler als uitgangspunt heeft. Als zwartspeler moet je er rekening mee houden dat wit waarschijnlijk beter is in de gevechten en dus is het meestal beter om niet de scherpste variant te kiezen maar juist de stelling te vereenvoudigen. Maar zwart moet zich niet laten verleiden tot alleen maar verdedigen en gebied maken, hij moet juist gebruik maken van zijn extra stenen om op invloed te spelen en aan te vallen.
Persoonlijk vind ik de opbouw van het boekje geen verbetering. Bij de 8 voorbeeldpartijen (1 x 7, 2 x 4 en 5 x 3 voorgiftstenen) staat te weinig uitleg om echt nuttig te zijn en de problemen zie ik liever bij de verschillende hoofdstukken en niet apart.
