It's always enlightening to read a book aimed at teenagers that was published sixty-one years ago. It's then that the cultural differences between that time and now come sharply into focus. In this book, a young girl from suburban Chicago goes down to Mexico City for summer school with her mother in tow as chaperon. She never protests that her mother comes along with her to every social event, nor do her young companions at the university find this unusual.

Of course she meets and falls for a totally inappropriate boy who is charming but inconsiderate. Our heroine's quandary with him is not whether or not she should have sex with this young rake, but whether or not she should kiss him - on the fifth date! Oh my! How times have changed!… (mehr)
