This is a re-read I've had for so long that I have no notes from the original read, I only remember that I really enjoyed it as a rom-com sort of book.

While it's definitely a rom-com, it's also definitely dated. The difference just under two decades can make is startling. I spent a lot of time thinking 'you could not get away with saying that now', and the total lack of subtlety often made this a trying re-read. But the Florida setting was still enjoyable, as were the eccentric characters in Pete's family, even if the plot was thin.… (mehr)

Pietra Lang, more commonly known as Pete, is the responsible one in her family--the one who fixes things. So when her grandmother dies, Pete's prepared to take on responsibility for the funeral, and for keeping the town's Fourth of July celebration going.

That might be a lot for an ordinary person, but Pete's not ordinary, so Fate throws her a few more curves: a dead body in her beloved grandmother's freezer--apparently one of her dead grandfather's mistresses, her brother's divorce attorney urging her to report the body, her family's dependence on her to make the problem go away, the body disappearing, and her politician-brother's wife and fiancee both showing up at the same time.

It's a little stressful, but Pete's still going strong, so Fate throws her a last curve, and makes her fall in love with Danny, the divorce attorney who's not only a playboy, but the one person standing between her and protecting her family from the scandal threatened by the dead body.

For Pete's Sake is a funny, fast-moving caper of a romance story, reminiscent of those screwball comedy movies. So much so that I kept picturing Cary Grant as Danny.… (mehr)
