Rinker Buck (b. 1950) is an award-winning American journalist and author. He was born and raised in Morristown, NJ. He graduated from Bowdoin College in Brunswick Maine, and began his journalism career as a reporter for the Berkshire Eagle, in 1973. Buck has written numerous non-fiction books, including: The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey, Shane Comes Home, First Job: A Memoir of Growing up at Work, If We Had Wings: The Enduring Dream of Flight, and Flights of Passage. Gave it 100 pages and just couldn't force myself to go further. Any comparison to Bill Bryson is vastly overstating the entertainment-factor of this book.

Life on the Mississippi: An Epic American Adventure von Rinker Buck

2.5 stars ... the history was interesting, but I am not the target audience for all the technical details about piloting a boat on the Mississippi. Also, it takes a certain personality (and money) to undertake the adventure he took. While his writing was informative on the history and geography of the area, I wasn't as keen on the rest of the book.

Flight of Passage: A Memoir von Rinker Buck

I love books like this. Not only do you get a peek inside one person, you get to explore another time, place,and culture in a way that history textbooks will never match.

The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey von Rinker Buck

I gave up on this book about a third of the way in. Went back to it and finished. The second half of the book is much more compelling reading - perhaps because of the trials Buck and his brother experience in crossing the Rockies. Buck is a beautiful craftsman but has a real problem with women. For example, the two women who were allowed to join the trip for a week or so are reduced to stereotypes - "typical long legged blond" or 'skinny blond". Buck values their contribution to the trail as how they cleaned the cooking equipment.… (mehr)
