Rezensionen

this was a very tepid book, so it is really a 2.5, which is kind of disappointing because I love space opera, and I like Lois McMaster Bujold's other works. The romance doesn't feel very fully developed, and any action/ political intrigue happens off-screen to be explained to the main character Cordelia. Coredelia also experiences culture shock from the Barrayan culture because they are an extremely militaristic and patriarchal culture, and not as technologically advanced. Most of the time she is the only woman in a sea of men, and the men are surprised that she is a captain. I don't think many of the issues presented are well analyzed, or even well resolved in this book, which is probably why it is published as part of an omnibus with the second book, because it just kind of ends in an unsatisfactory way.
The best scene is when Cordelia actually goes home. That is the first time I felt emotionally invested in the character. She spends a large portion of the book thinking her side is better, only to be proven wrong when she is used as a political pawn and drugged by her own military. They condemn her because she fell in love with Vorkosigan, and that was the first time I felt like the character might actually be in love with him.

ETHAN OF ATHOS
2012-03-05
4/5

All-around solid Vorkosigan novel, though more traditional sci-fi than the usual space-opera. Interesting thoughts on misogyny/sexism (and the economics thereof!), futuristic family structures, and space-station life, with some additional touches on homophobia and genetic engineering. Info-dumpy in a few spots, but most of the thoughtful sci-fi stuff was well-integrated into the plot. Like the whole process of getting rid of the body!: total excuse to tour the life-support systems of a space station, but still advanced the plot.

I appreciated that Ethan didn't stop being gay just because he'd realized there were other options. Maybe that's a weird thing to say, but I was acutely aware of the possibility from the moment he met Elli. Yay!

Normally Bujold's characters are amazingly complex and realistic, but I didn't really "get" Terrance. He acts very teenager-y, so it was jarring that he was also old enough to be driven by the ideas of marriage and reproduction. Those two things make some sense as results of his upbringing, but he didn't get enough screen time to integrate them and become a complete character. And the specific sci-fi issues he represented/advanced were the least well-integrated into the plot.

This is part of my current, internal-chronology, start-to-finish reread of the Vorkosigan books. Heh. I've picked up on a few fun inter-book references, and I'm hoping for more.

3/5

Probably my least favorite of the Vorkosigan books. The intrigue bored me, for once, and I still can't remember what happened. Something about genetics.

Reread, 7/30/2012. I was surprised at the extent to which I'd forgotten what happened. Probably one of the more terrifying Vorkosigan books; once the climax started, I needed to finish it so I could avoid nightmares.

On to Cryoburn! That is, if S. ever lets me have my e-reader back.

THE WARRIOR'S APPRENTICE

I read this non-stop while traveling Saturday. SO. MUCH. FUN. Miles Vorkosigan is at his outrageously intelligent, hyperactive, utterly fabulous prime. Wish it had never ended, and now I have to wait before I can read it again...!

So I totally read this again.... It's funny to me that some people don't reread; I reread a lot. Sometimes I get in the mood for something particular and I know a book that can scratch that itch. Plus, I almost always find some new detail I never noticed before.

Oh look, I'm reading "Warrior's Apprentice" again. Miles is obviously the apprentice, but who is the warrior here? Bothari? Tung? The entire Dendarii fleet? Hm.

THE VOR GAME

I know it has no plot, but I just fuckin' love this book. It is ridiculously fun.
