How To Get A Literary Agent in Two Murders Or Less / Ellie Burmeister.
Reviewed from a copy provided through the Library Thing Early Reviewers Program.
Amanda is an unpublished writer. She attends a writers' conference hoping to be signed by an agent, has a miserable time but meets a famous mystery writer, and after a whirlwind romance, marries him and discovers the truth of the old adage "marry in haste, repent at leisure."
I had a bad feeling about this book from the moment I saw the dreadful cover illustration and it certainly had flaws. The main character is an unbelievably naive idiot, not to mention a wimp. The famous writer (Jonny Goodsnuff! Really! Is there a stupider sounding name for a mystery writer?) is an arrogant sleaze from day one, and devolves further every time he appears on the scene, his daughters are horrors, and the handsome next-door-neighbour is creepy. The plot is a bit weak, with way too much “had I but known”foreshadowing. The author's grasp of police procedure seemed a bit dodgy.
That said, I found the story readable enough despite wanting to bang the heroine's head against a wall, and the author writes dialogue well – it never felt stilted or phony. She clearly understands grammar and punctuation. I think she has potential, but this book feels like an early effort that probably should have been workshopped a bit more before being released to the world.… (mehr)

This is a book about three writers, one of whom ends up dead. There is a fair amount of detail about the publishing industry and how difficult it is to get published as a first time author. But the book is basically a murder mystery.
While I didn't like all of the characters, I did like the depth of description given to each of them. They are all unique individuals and there is little that is stereotypical about them. The mystery part is interesting and it kept me reading into the night. This book isn't great, but it is good, and it has a unique story line. I enjoyed it.… (mehr)

I received this book as part of the Early Reviewers program. Like others who have previously reviewed it, I agree with most of them about Amanda, the main character. She is just too gullible. OK, most people would be easily impressed with wealth, jewelry and fancy clothes and maybe would even marry someone after knowing them only a month or so. It just seemed too superficial to me. I just about stopped reading halfway through but when the accident happened and changed everything for Amanda, I kept reading to see if she got any smarter about things. Well, she didn't but with the help of two friends and another one who comes to mean much more to her, she muddles her way through to understanding everything that happened. As other reviewers said, this really isn't a murder mystery. It is fairly obvious who is the villain. I can't say it's a great book, but it is probably a good on for summer reading on the beach.… (mehr)

With that said, it was still a reasonably enjoyable read, and I enjoyed the slant on the publishing industry, although at times even that was a bit over the top. Essentially, this story had potential, but I'm hoping that potential plays out in Ellen Burmeister's next work, because it didn't quite make it here.… (mehr)
