The prospective river-runner from outside California will want to memorize the extensive detailed information on flows, rocks, gradient, length of shuttle drive, portages, and other bits. Not much for the general reader until you get to the back where geology, natural history, and fishing are given 16 pages; no history or commentary beyond "a narrow section of the river" remark.
