A fascinating portrait of a man who lived through both the Christian Church/churches of Christ division and the division that was taking place within churches of Christ on the institutional questions. The author chronicles Lewis' early years, school years, early preaching experiences, but focuses primarily on his work in preaching and teaching in meetings and classes and assemblies in Birmingham.
The author draws from Lewis' personal journal, the material he wrote for various publications, and interviews with people who knew Lewis. The author's research and sources are extremely apparent, for better and for worse-- for better because you feel more involved in the process, but for the worse because the book suffers from the lack of polish and cohesion, leaving you the reader to attempt to fill in the gaps and to put the various strands in the story together, and because it leads to redundancy between the anecdotes mentioned within the narrative and then afterward in the interviews.
Nevertheless, a great read to better understand Lewis, his influence on the church in Alabama, and the days during which he lived.… (mehr)
