Quizás ningún místico en la historia del mundo haya profundizado tanto en el conocimiento interno que informa nuestro ser como lo hizo Ibn 'Arabi. Nació en el crisol cultural y religioso de la España andaluza en 1165, un lugar y tiempo en el que los eruditos musulmanes, judíos y cristianos aprendieron unos de otros y de los clásicos griegos que se traducían y circulaban. Basándose en el pensamiento filosófico y metafísico más avanzado de su época y en su extenso conocimiento de la religión del Islam, Ibn 'Arabi creó una teología mística extraordinaria que surgió esencialmente de su propia realización espiritual. Debido a la naturaleza avanzada de sus enseñanzas, ha sido conocido durante 800 años como el Sheikh al-Akbar, o el Gran Maestro. Debido a la sutileza de su lenguaje y la complejidad de su pensamiento, el acceso a Ibn 'Arabi siempre ha sido difícil y la traducción desalentadora. Perhaps no mystic in the history of the world has delved as deeply into the inner knowledge that informs our being as did Ibn 'Arabi. He was born into the cultural and religious crucible of Andalusian Spain in 1165, a place and time in which Muslim, Jewish and Christian scholars learned from each other and from the Greek classics that were then being translated and circulated. Drawing from the most advanced philosophical and metaphysical thinking of his time and from his extensive knowledge of the religion of Islam, Ibn 'Arabi created an extraordinary mystical theology that essentially sprang from his own spiritual realization. Because of the advanced nature of his teachings he has been known for 800 years as the Sheikh al-Akbar, or the Greatest Master. Because of the subtlety of his language and complexity of his thought, access to Ibn 'Arabi has always been difficult and translation daunting. Previously only short extracts were available in English. This volume, the first in our English translation of Les Illuminations de la Mecque, contains 22 key chapters of this Sufi 'summa mystica,' on such issues as Ibn 'Arabi's doctrine of the Divine Names, the nature of spiritual experience, the end of time, the resurrection and the stages of the path that lead to sanctity. Ibn Arabi, nacido en 1165 en Andalucía y fallecido en 1240 en Damasco, fue reconocido en su vida como al-Shaykh al-Akbar, el Maestro espiritual supremo. Durante un período de ocho siglos, ha ejercido una profunda influencia en el misticismo islámico. En los últimos años, varios estudios importantes han ayudado a familiarizar al lector occidental con la metafísica de Ibn Arabi, y este proceso se ve mejorado en gran medida por el volumen actual en el que Michael Chodkiewicz explora por primera vez la "hagiología" del Maestro o la enseñanza sobre la santidad. Ibn Arabi, born in 1165 in Andalusia and died in 1240 in Damascus, was recognised in his lifetime as al-Shaykh al-Akbar, the supreme spiritual Master. Over a period of eight centuries he has exerted a profound influence on Islamic mysticism. In recent years a number of important studies have helped acquaint the Western reader with Ibn Arabi's metaphysics and this process is now greatly enhanced by the present volume in which Michael Chodkiewicz explores for the first time, the Master's 'hagiology' or teaching on sainthood.
