- Lady Randolph Churchill, née Jennie Jerome, was born to a wealthy family in Brooklyn, New York. She and her two sisters went to England to seek social status and husbands among the aristocracy. In 1874, Jennie married Lord Randolph Churchill, younger son of the Duke of Marlborough, with whom she had two sons, most famously Winston Churchill. She was an influential hostess and member of the highest social circles, and became a close friend of the Prince of Wales (future Edward VII). An active political campaigner and supporter of her husband's career, she founded the Primrose League in 1883 to allow women to promote Conservative legislators. After Lord Randolph died, Jennie married twice more. She ran short of money and published her memoirs The Reminiscences of Lady Randolph Churchill, to great success in 1908. She also wrote a play and her 1916 collection of essays, Short Talks on Big Subject, was very successful. In later life she became a fundraiser for charitable causes and supported her son Winston's political career.
