The Seduction of Madalyn, by Cynthia A. Clement, is book 2 in a series. But for the most part, it stands alone. I didn't read the first book and never felt as if I missed anything relevant to this story.
The Seduction of Madalyn is a historical romance set in both England and Charleston. Madalyn witnesses her younger brother being kidnapped from England and follows him to Charleston to try to find and rescue him. On the way, she meets Nathan, a businessman who lives in Charleston and who also agrees to help her find her brother. Despite their main goal to find the boy, they also manage to find romance along the way.
I didn't love the beginning of this story. But the more I read, the more the story began to draw me in. I'm used to reading historical romances set in London. So to read one set in Charleston, a city I'm very familiar with, was pretty interesting. The main characters were decent. Nathan was a good guy, but his reluctance to love wore thin after awhile. Madalyn was adorable, yet reckless and foolish at times. But, things seemed to work out for them. There were several villains in this story, each seemingly more despicable than the last. They gave Nathan and Madalyn plenty of obstacles to overcome.
Overall, the book was pretty good. I didn't always enjoy the style of writing, but the story itself was never boring.
