- John Collier was a social reformer and advocate for American Indians. From 1922 he became a prominent critic of U.S. administration of Indian policy. Appointed commissioner of Indian affairs (1933-1945), he worked to reverse assimilationist policies and strengthen Indian self-determination. He later served as director of the National Indian Institute and taught sociology at the College of the City of New York.
