Alan Copeland Collins

A collection of pictures, chiefly prints, some based on earlier paintings or (in more recent cases) photographs, illustrating American history from Columbus through build-up to World War II. There are short captions on the pictures giving brief summaries of the events. The author notes that some of the illustrations are based on paintings which romanticized the events or were based on partial information, but he feels they give the right general idea. Some of his choices are interesting --for instance, he does not illustrate Custer's Last Stand with the standard romanticized picture but rather with a picture of Custer's men earlier attacking a Native camp, and comments that the Natives did to Custer what he had been doing to them.… (mehr)
