This is one of the best books on the Musket Wars that raged in New Zealand during the nineteenth century. Sparked by the arrival of the musket and new food sources this wave of conflicts affected most of New Zealand and saw tens of thousands of Maori killed or forced into slavery as well as the changing of traditional tribal boundaries. A valuable resource.

A well researched and written account of Captain Gilbert Mair who took part in the Tauranga Bush Campaign of 1867 and also commanded the No. 1 Arawa Flying Column that hunted Te Kooti (pronounced 'te caughty') and his followers through the Urewera bush. Very readable with a contents page, list of maps, preface, acknowledgements, prologue, family tree, notes, bibliography, glossary and index.
