Victor Edward Crutchley

The word "fundi" which derives from kaSwahili, is used all over eastern, central and southern Africa to mean an expert, specialist or master craftsman; Victor Crutchley went to Zambia with VSO in the mid 1980s, where he worked as an Alternative Technologist in rural districts. He was impressed by the many imaginative and resourseful inventors he met. This slim book, which is illustrated with his sketches, celebrates the ability of the fundis he met and how with limited materials and equipment they are able to make something useful.
