I enjoyed this, with caveats: one, the hero never groveled the way he needed to, after how he treated the heroine. Two, I dislike heroine-chases-hero storylines in general, and disliked it all the more in this book given how the hero treated her - she had no reason to think she could make him fall in love with her, especially given that he should have been begging her forgiveness. Still, overall a good read.
Alys le Fayre, a silly, self-absorbed girl, manages to get her fiance Lucan killed. Unfortunately for her, Lucan was the half-faerie half-mortal son of Aengus, the faerie king. As a result, Alys is conscripted into faerie service until Lucan is born again, so that she can right her wrong against him and hopefully help his soul become whole again, thus ensuring that he goes to heaven after he dies rather than dissipating into dust, as faeries do.
Fast-forward 500 years, and Lucan is finally reborn as Lucian. Unfortunately, Lucian's soul has been greatly damaged by his repast, and his emotions have been almost completely shut off, so Alys' task of completing his soul with his one true love is monumental, and she only has four months in which to do it. She begins her quest by poking and prodding him, trying to get him accustomed to feeling emotions. Misunderstandings and more ensue as they feel their way around each other and start to fall in love.
i enjoyed reading this fun book, and it was interesting to watch the twists and turns as the two fell in love and to try to figure out how they were going to end up together, both healthy and whole. The concept was original, as I've certainly never read another romance built on the premise that faeries turn to dust after 1000 years, and true love makes half-faeries turn into mortals, etc. The writing was pretty good, although not phenomenal. However, the main reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that I really dislike it when the male/female conflict is so greatly exaggerated, and I feel like this novel had a bit of that going on. Otherwise, this was a fun book to read, and I think anyone who likes a bit of magic along with their romance will love this book.… (mehr)
