For public purposes these are very well served lectures that guide through a general outline of several clusters of historical beliefs among the Romans, Greeks and some other cultures, retracing their mutations and changes. Seldom they are accentuating which ones were absorbed into the Christian worldview. It is a cleverly composed work, which at its foundation is secular, yet of high necromantic value for intentful researchers. One may rely on the visions of sages, speculation of the poets, to the contrary - the crowd and the atheist Epicurean uncrowns their vista, yet to the detriment of the link between the world of the living and Thanathos in Veils that sustained bears poisoned fruits that heal both worlds, if understood properly.… (mehr)

Tal como o título indica, esta obra tem como tema o mitraísmo. Dado o seu reduzido volume é uma obra interessante onde está sintetizado o essencial.
Porém, tendo o mitraísmo conhecido o seu apogeu no seio do império romano e tido como maior adversário o cristianismo, esta obra explica o sucesso do cristianismo de uma forma mais clara que qualquer obra dedicada ao cristianismo. é que as razões do sucesso do cristianismo são-lhe exteriores, são as conjunturas romanas e são as adopções que o cristianismo fez da cultura greco-latina e de elementos de outras religiões e, entre elas, do mitraísmo. por este último aspecto, algumas páginas deste livro são um verdadeiro tesoiro.
Esta obra foi escrita no final do século XIX. Mais de cem depois, qual será o estado da arte?
