An excellent, comprehensive and optimistic take on how America can improve the quality of healthcare while reducing its cost. It starts out with a good overview of the literature on cost/value and then proceeds with chapters that go through the three elements of improvement: (1) better use of IT; (2) better aligned incentives; and (3) reformed management.

Reasonable, sober overview of top level issues in health care economics. Cutler's own work has been in assessing the benefit of medical procedures, and here he is clear and compelling. But that's about the deepest the book gets, so I can't recommend it for someone who has spent a great deal of time in the field. As a quick overview piece, or a place to begin, I'd highly recommend it. Cutler seems like a mensch.

Also, he digs up a great GB Shaw quote from "The Doctor's Dilemma".
