- A well-known scholar of Southwestern colonial history and the Malaspina scientific exhibitions, he earned a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. He taught at the University of Southern California and was Professor of History Emeritus at the University of New Mexico. Upon retirement from UNM, he held the O'Connor Chair for the History of Hispanic Texas and the Southwest at St. Mary's University, San Antonio, Texas. He authored many books and articles and lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Various research and teaching trips took him to Spain and Mexico. He served honorably as a Naval officer in the Pacific during WWII on the USS Pecos.
